Coin Collection sells for in excess of £30,000

Ex-Mayor of Smethick Coin Collection sells for in excess of £30,000 whilst a rare watercolour painted by Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Alice sells for £700.



A fine collection of coins spanning 1000 years of English history sold for in excess of £30,000 at Hansons recent Specialist Coin and Collectors auction.

Commenting on the sale Charles Hanson reported, 'We were delighted to have handled a collection of coins belonging to the Estate of Wilfred Lunn MBE. Interest in the coins was nationwide and we nurtured a number of buyers in Europe bidding on the coins.

'The late Wilfred Lunn was widely known in the West Midlands. He certainly had a keen eye for sourcing and buying fine coins which were competivevly fought for in our auction.'

Highlights included £250 for a William I silver penny and £240 for a Henry VIII 1520 groat.

Lot 107 saw four telephone lines compete for lot 107, an Edward VI crown from 1551 which took £520 .

Lot 157, a rare William and Mary crown dated 1691 took £400.

A rare George III sovereign 1818 took £400 whilst two George V crowns dated 1928 and 1933 took £420.

Elsewhere in the auction a fine watercolour, lot 423, painted by Princess Alice and dated 8 June 1860 depicting a sleeping child in a cradle sold for £700. A pair of Queen Victoria's stockings sold for £550 whilst a chemise from 1860 also belonging to Queen Victoria sold for £400 (watercolor and chemise pictured below with Hansons Rebecca Ludlam).



An important collection of letters from the Royal Households of Windsor and Osborne sold for over £2,000.
