Hansons Auctioneers reported a ‘best ever’ record turnout of buyers for their recent antique and collectors auction on Wednesday 19 August. Commenting on the sale, Mr Hanson reported, ‘the prices at auction for antiques are at a five year high despite the general economic downturn. Antiques are increasingly being perceived by the general public as being wise investments with a proven history’. The silver section yielded a 100% selling rate. Highlights included lot 4, a French silver teaset which sold for £410. A good Edwardian silver kettle on stand sold for £330 whilst lot 25, an Art Deco silver and enamel cigarette box rose to £240. The jewellery section which totalled over 250 lots was primarily consigned from the estate of a distinguished West Midland lady. Highlights included lot 187, a Georg Jensen necklace, lot 187 which sold for £420. Lot 209, an 18ct gold pocketwatch sold for £400 whilst lot 64, an 18ct gold and diamond ring sold for £480. Lot 227, a Rolex Oyster wristwatch from circa 1925 realised £700 whilst lot 228 a similar watch sold for £700 A collection of miners lamps consigned by a Norfolk Gentleman to sale had a 100% selling rate. Highlights included £100 for a Thomas and Williams miners lamp. A collection of Corgi toys from the mid 1950s took in excess of £1500. Elsewhere in Collectors, lot 366, a good postcard album sold for £300. Hansons were also pleased to welcome BBC Bargain Hunt to the sale and healthy profits were achieved by experts Kate Bliss and Jonathan Pratt. Lot 181, a Rupert Puzzle had been bought for £5 at a recent antique fair. At auction it sold for £38. Undoubted highlight was lot 363, a rare French boxed Torpedo Panhard motor car which quadrupled expectations to sell at £850. Lot 376, a rare German bayonet took £950. In Ceramics, lot 411, a rare Royal Doulton figurine Pretty Lady took £600 whilst lot 419, a Royal Doulton figure Kink Henry VIII sold for £200. Lot 469, GOOD Masonic pottery jug, circa 1820 sold for £220. Two Doulton Lambeth tiles, lots 553 and 554 quickly exceeded expectations to take £280 and £310 respectively. In the works of art section , lot 618, a good 19th century double bass was surprise of the day when it realised £1800. Lot 663, a map of Warwickshire rose to take £850 Rugs and the furniture section all sold well. In all 754 lots Hansons were pleased to report a selling rate at 94.5% Hansons forthcoming auction will be a house sale on the premises on 5 September at The Kirkstyles, Wirksworth Road, Duffield, Derbyshire.
