Hansons Auction Report - 21/05/2009

Hansons auction in Lichfield on 21 May saw some brisk bidding and strong results.

Highlights included £600 for a fine rustic sampler. Lot 492, measuring only 5 x 8" was beautifully stitched in the 1760s with a lady and companion before a red brick building and a black cat. Within its original oak frame, the sampler easily oustripped its £150 guide price. Another small collection of samplers, lot 486 rose to take £300.

Silver began proceedings and over 90% of lots found buyers. Lot 33, a novelty silver owl whistle took £140.

In collectors, a good collection of toys including Dinky and Corgi took over £3000.

In ceramics, a car boot find for one client at £1 created a stir. Lot 276, a Lowestoft cream jug took £300 much to the vendors delight.

A collection of pearlware pottery and Derby porcelain sold well including lot 380. Catalogued as a pair of pearlware figures of Neptune and companion of circa 1820, the lot rose to take £600.

Following on for the sale of a rare teapot at £69,000 in April, lot 410, a teapot dated 1799 had been consigned to an Oxfam charity shop in Ashbourne. The teapot sold for £120.

In Pictures a painting monogrammed J Laschelles took £520.

The furniture section which predominantly comprised collections from two estates in Leicestershire and Lichfield saw some strong prices.

Commenting after the auction, Charles Hanson reported, 'the market for antiques and collectables at auction is particularly buoyant at present. Objects realistically estimated and fresh to the market are being met with an enthusiastic reponse for our clients. Buyers are increasingly attending auctions and in such current depressed financial markets, are keen to acquire obejcts of art which present a more stable investment'.

Hansons forthcoming auction will be on 27 May at The Mackworth Hotel. The single owner sale, 'The Property of a Warwickshire la' will be on view on 26 May from 11am-7pm.
